I’ve been interested in history and politics since childhood. Over time I became increasingly aware that, around the world, the same kinds of terrible stories keep playing out. Underpaid, poorly treated workers trying to unionize for better wages are repeatedly blocked by rich businessmen with the police’s help. Feminists fight sexism but never fully end it. Minorities fight racism but also never end it. Journalists  expose corruption, but corruption always continues.

It became increasingly clear to me that endless corruption, lies, greed and discrimination never go away no matter how hard people try to eradicate it and no matter who people vote for.

What would it take to really bring deep change? Is a world without selfishness, greed, and abuse even possible?

In 2014, I left my so-called “successful” career behind to go find out. After many months traveling through South America, learning new languages, and getting robbed and almost killed several times, I had no leads and no ideas, and I was ready to give up.

The very next day, I met a man whose unexpected invitation changed my life. I joined him on a long visit to a place I could not have even dreamed of—to  live with a healthy nation, the Ashaninka (featured in Chapter 1 of both books). For the first time in my life, I witnessed first hand a whole nation living entirely without corruption, selfishness, or greed. Without discrimination, abuse, or hate. Without prisons, police, or crime. Where people routinely treated each other and  the Earth with generosity and respect. Not just a few. Thousands of people.

Over the next decade, I studied dozens of nations that live or lived as beautifully as the Ashaninka. They helped me see the root cultural disease that causes so much corruption, greed, and needless suffering in unhealthy nations around the world. And they showed me the root cure: to walk a path with others to create new healthy nations that maintain a baseline of respect, without corruption and greed, where integrity, generosity, and trust are the norm—a path offered in my book, The Deepest Revolution.
